Eric told me that his father Alfred Charles was one of the first people in Newcastle to buy a Ford Model T, around 1920. The chassis had a tray body on the back and was utilised for home deliveries. It replaced their horse and cart. I recall Eric said the Ford car (the two words went together) was much more economical to run than the hungry horse, but the horse had the advantage of knowing the route and where to stop outside each of the customers' houses.
