Tallinn, Estonia.  8 June 2014, Sunday

Thunder and driving rain didn't make things took too good for our day in Tallinn, but since it was probably going to be my only chance to see this jewel of a medieval town, we rugged up and clambered into our wet weather gear, and headed off to cope with the cobblestones of Tallinn's Old Town

The cobblestones are actually probably the worst I've ever seen - that is, the hardest to walk on!  I presume they've been repaired at times over the years, but in an effort to retain some authenticity, comfort and ease of walking has come second.

There were at least three cruise ships in town town, ours by far the biggest, and thousands of us tourists surged through the alleyways and back lanes of the old town, like locusts on the move.

We snapped at everything with a conical tower, but the star of the show was the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with its multi-coloured onion domes, which was surrounded by hundreds of tourists when we were there.  Our visit coincided with Sunday Mass, and so we heard some lovely choir music as we entered.  It must be hard for the local worshippers to concentrate on their devotions when there are hundreds of tourists milling around, ignoring the "quiet please" signs.

We're now underway, heading  east for St Petersburg, and the second time zone change of the cruise.  The forecast for St Petersburg tomorrow is 23° and sunny.  And the weather did improve in Tallinn today as well.
