Copenhagen airport, 14 June 2014, Saturday

The start of the long journey home.....

We had to leave the ship by 8.30am today, another early start which meant we had to pack and have our luggage ready for pickup before dinner last night.  Disembarking this morning went smoothly - I think they learnt from the schmozzle of the other day in St Petersburg.  They had organised us into different groups, with different assembly areas, so there was no bottle neck.

Since our flight to London isn't until ten to eight tonight, w were looking at a long, uncomfortable wait at the airport. Although we could get rid of our big bags by checking in on line, we had to wait of several hours before we would be allowed to go through security.

The only real option was to hop on to the metro and go into town for lunch, and a walk around - maybe we'd get to see sights we missed out on seeing a couple of weeks ago  And so it turned out.

But before that, a little drama on the metro  It was crowded, and when it stopped at our station, Dave was able to get off, but the crush of people meant the doors closed before I (and three other passengers) could get out. The expression on Dave's face as he watched me being whisked away down the line was a classic. Other passengers were reassuring.  A frequent occurrence, I was told (in perfect English by a local gentleman).  "Just get out at the next station, walk across the platform and get on the train going back the other way. It will only be a couple of minutes".

And that's what happened.  In the meantime, I had texted Dave, telling him I was on the way back and for him to wait where he was.  So, end result - no problem. A delay of no more than 10 minutes.

We generally like a light lunch, and that's what I thought I'd ordered  when I asked for a beef sandwich.  This is the Danish idea of a sandwich and what I was served::::

(above - centre and right):  The restaurant, like many we've seen here in these latitudes has an outdoor area, complete with red blankets for customers to wrap themselves in when the temperatures plunges a little too low!  Madness to eat outside in weather requiring a blanket.  And we were served tea, with tea bags which came in pretty little boxes, alongside a glass of hot water!  I don't think they are really tea drinkers over here.

So afterwards, a walk was called for.  We ticked off a few more sights: the Round Tower (below left), built as an astronomical observatory way back in 1642, the nearby Copenhagen Cathedral, which is a solid, solemn-fronted edifice, with a restrained interior (below centre and below right), and Rosenberg Castle (right).

We are now relaxing and waiting in the British Airways lounge at the airport (courtesy of the complementary Gold Frequent Flyer card which Qantas issued to me as a PR gesture to Geoff, who is a genuine Qantas frequent flyer - fortunately the card doesn't expire until the end of this month.   I've had good use out of it).

And a final note for anyone contemplating a visit to Copenhagen - be prepared to deal with bicycles!! Obviously, everyone uses them, regardless of age, as normal everyday transport

It's going to take a few days to get home to the Australian winter, but I'm guessing that it won't be any colder there than some of the weather we've had here in the northern summer.
