Saturday, 9 Mau, Khao Lak
Approaching Phuket by air from Bangkok Our destination yesterday was the resort town of Khao Lak, about 90km from its more famous (infamous?) neighbour Phuket, where our Air Asia flight landed us. Both resort towns were victims of the 2004 tsunami which killed many thousands of people, both locals and tourists. We'd picked Khao Lak purely on the basis of a "special deal" by the resort hotel here, JW Marriott, and so far, have had no cause to regret the impulse. We've been told the Marriott chain took over the hotel six years ago, rebuilding it after it was destroyed by the tsunami, when it was part of the Sofitel group. The Marriott is now a first class resort offering so much, to people who don't want to do very much. The most excitement most people seem to want to do is don a swimsuit and fall into one of the swimming pools. Mind you, the bath in our ensuite is as big as a pool (right). Some might make it to the beach. I asked Dave if he thought there were sharks there. "No," he said. "There's six pieces of bait there and they haven't been taken", referring to six bathers. 'Swimmers' is too energetic a word to describe those floating and wading in the water. His reassurance sounds logical, but I won't rely on it. So far, our most onerous task has been deciding "when do we want a massage". (Such a First World problem). We concluded that Tuesday would be soon enough. Let's not be too energetic here. Today, we had a hot start today the day. DB didn't realise that agreeing to "everything" in our omelette filling would include chillies. They weren't too hard to pick out. I'm of the opinion that we humans are powered with a big rubber band, as a sort of internal engine. Now, at Khao Lak, the rubber band is broken and all I feel capable of is sleeping, eating and reading... But I think I can just stir myself to have a massage - even if it is at the other end of the resort. |
