Return to Kuala Lumpur via Oman

Sunday, 5 May, Muscat, Oman

First impressions of Muscat, capital of the Omani sultanate.

Its airport, modern and large, all shiny marble, granite  and sandstone walls, was almost deserted - apart from the passengers on my flight, that is.   By contrast, KLIA where I'd departed from, had been chaotic with thousands of people streaming through its walkways and queuing for Immigration.  I was through Muscat's terminal, and out into the searing desert heat,  in a very brief time.

Everything here is in varying shades of white or beige - even the mountain escarpment bordering the barren coastal strip where the city lies, is simply a darker shade of beige.  No greenery to speak of.

The city is still being built - in every direction, there are half-constructed buildings, generally around the 10-12-storey mark - but widely spaced, fronting onto streets that are tar sealed, but without kerbing and guttering.  Apparently there's no need for that refinement here - it rains only rarely.

I'd thought of doing a day tour around Muscat today, but the beginnings of a cold overnight has persuaded me to rest today, and leave the sight-seeing until my return here in a month or so, with Dave.  It'll be better with him anyhow.

Thinking that I should venture out just a little, I headed for the roof top pool, planning to have lunch up there.   I lasted a mere two minutes, even in the shade.  Blistering heat 37+ drove me to the down stairs (air conditioned) restaurant.

Later tonight, I'll head back out to the airport, for my flight to Casablanca, where I'll meet up with Dave.....Can't wait!
