Ambasmestas, Spain   21 May Wednesday

Weak creature that I am, I was pleased when DB took the taxi option today with rain falling and afternoon storms forecast.  I  suspect that had he been on his own, he would have walked the 22km from Cacebelos to Ambasmestas, as he did in similiar circumstances last year. The difference this time was that it would have meant my making my own way solo, whereas last year, I was with Liz and Dave H..

So, with an unscheduled free afternoon in Ambasmestas, fortune frowned - Dave's well-travelled laptop almost died, so he spent several hours here tracing, and fixing, the problem  He has promised himself a new computer when we get home.

below: Dave working on his laptop in the bar our of posada, while more determined peregrinos trudge steadily through the rain outside...

(later)  as you would expect, the weather cleared, but too late!  However, we did go for an afternoon walk around a couple of the local villages, where, as on other days, I've been surprised by the number of derelict houses. I know Spain had a tough time of it during the GFC, and that is probably the root cause for the housing situation.  It's quite common to see an abandoned house, attached by a common wall to another house undergoing restoration.  I don't think I would like to live directly next door to a wreck

Our time in Spain this year is three weeks earlier than our walk on the Camino last year - and the contrast is noticeable.  It's much colder now, and the conditions much harsher.  Of course, we are at a considerably higher altitude than we were last time, and so that is probably responsible for much of the difference.

Tomorrow will be another walk-free day.  We've had a look at the schedule and see that the Camino track climbs steeply from here, more than 600 metres in 8 kilometres, for a total of 14k- and that would be hard work.  Too hard for me.  So back to a taxi!  At least, that's the plan for the moment
