Gijon, Spain, 26 May, Monday We reckon the northern coast of Spain could be a pleasant place, if they could just wind the thermostat up a notch!. There is some debate as to when summer actually starts here, but if it is on the first of June next weekend, the thermometer has a long way to go. Conditions weren't helped today by a chilly north wind, that is, from the Arctic. Even the locals in the town of Gijon, where we are staying tonight, are rugged up as if it's winter. Instead of our legs, our transport for the next few days is a little VW Polo, which is just big enough for the two of us and our luggage. The drive here from Lugo was notable for a couple of things - the motorway was top-notch, with some very high bridges linking directly into tunnels, and alongside, at least to start with, were some very striking and graceful wind turbine farms. I quite like the look of these turbines, finding them infinitely preferable to open cut coal mines as sources of power generation. |

![]() We're booked into a hotel which is a big contrast to the places we've stayed at in the past two weeks. This one looks like a monstrous dark glass cube, but it's quite comfortable in the "international-hotel" style, with a good view of the Gijon beach. The beach looks pretty good, by European standards, but given the icy conditions, not many people were taking advantage of it. below: (left) the view from our hotel room; and (right) a walk along the promenade to the "Old Town" section of Gijon |

Our plan is to drive to Bilboa, a bit further east along the Bay of Biscay, and stay there for a couple of nights. We'll check out that town's version of a Guggenheim museum (which DB persists in referring to as 'Googleheim'). |
